7 Tips/Reasons Why Every Writer Should Have a Pinterest Account

I was never interested in Pinterest. It seemed a little silly and pointless to me. Then I realized that it is a great tool for writers; A tool most of us probably don’t even think to use. I believe it can help us exponentially, and not only as writers but as authors trying to engage fans. Here are seven tips/reasons why having a Pinterest account is a good idea and how to use it.

1.) Having a place where you can easily file away visuals to help you in your world building is fantastic. You can have a different board for each country or place of interest. Say you have scenes in a forest, a desert, and on a ship. Having a board that’s full of such photos will give you the visual inspiration you need and thus help trigger the writing of engaging, realistic settings.

2.) If you’re writing a sci-fi, fantasy, or steampunk story, having a board full of outlines, names, and explanations of different types of swords, guns, clothing, ways of travel, and such will help keep your amazing fictional world grounded in reality enough to be believable. This is a great way to study up and keep track of things. We don’t want to make our readers upset with our lack of knowledge, now do we?

3.) Keep boards for upcoming novels. Your fans will love being able to see what is inspiring you. What reader doesn’t want a sneak peek of something that could be in their favorite novelists next book? Get your readers engaged with your Pinterest account. It might be a lot of fun!

4.) I like to keep a board where I file away things that don’t have a place in my world or story—yet. Images that will inspire me later and lead to a rather unique setting or character.

5.) Visual triggers can also do wonders when you’re feeling a lack of motivation. Browse through different pins and boards that are relevant to your story. I’m sure something will pop out at you and give you the kick you need to keep writing. (Just don’t lose focus and spend too much time browsing. You have to write, too!) ;)

6.) Have one board where you keep photos of your books’ cover art, and maybe even fan art of your characters and such. This is another good way to engage fans.

7.) Verify your website with your Pinterest account. If people stumble upon your photos, realize you’re an author, and become interested, you want them to be able to easily find you and your books.
